A Walking Weekend in
Bath
Bath, recognised as one of the world's most
beautiful cities, is one of only four European
cities to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage
Site - the others being Florence, Venice and
Strasbourg. Bath's Georgian terraces, crowned
by the magnificent Royal Circus and Royal
Crescent, climb dramatically up the hillsides
while the historic centre, where the Roman
baths and ancient abbey still stand, is in
a splendid location by the River Avon. The
city is being reborn as a spa town, with the
old baths set to reopen in 2002, as well as
new ones featuring a rooftop pool. Below is
a programme for a walking tour of Bath - it
is a self guided walking weekend, expect to
spend two nights in Bath.
PROGRAMME:
Day 1: Arrive in Bath. There
is much to see in the city - the Roman Baths,
the Abbey, the lovely river Avon and Putney
Bridge, the four Cresents and the Circus,
any number of museums and galleries, and,
most importantly, street after street of palatial
townhouses showcasing Roman, Georgian and
Victorian Architecture.
Day 2: Walk the Bath skyline.
This 6-mile walk takes you up onto the wooded
heights (6 hills) overlooking the city. Pass
by Sham Castle, Prior Park Landscape Garden,
and countryside that has remained unploughed
for over forty years, a wonderful haven for
wildlife. Best of all are the sweeping views
across the city of Bath. Ask at the
tourist information office for infomation
on Bath Sky Line walk.
Day 3: Walk from Bath to Bradford-on-Avon.
There are two possible routes. One follows
the Kennet & Avon Canal, the other takes
you back up to the heights above the city
and then on to Farleigh Hungerford with its
fine 14th century castle, before emerging
at Bradford. Your luggage will have been transported
to your accommodation from Bath. (10 miles).
Overnight Bradford-on-Avon.
